Bach and the High Baroque

Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony. Whether devoted admirer or casual listener, you'll gain a new appreciation of the composer and a heightened skill at listening to his work.

You begin by learning the musical traditions and composers that inspired Bach, and how he absorbed those influences to become the transcendent composer of the High Baroque, more representative of the period and its aesthetic of emotional extravagance and technical control than any other. And you'll learn how both his German Lutheran heritage and family background - at least 42 relatives professionally involved with music - helped shape him as an artist.

Above all, though, you experience an abundance of music, with Professor Greenberg highlighting his discussions by playing major excerpts from several of Bach's most important works - including the Brandenburg Concerto no. 2, the Goldberg Variations, and the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - and also showing you how to compare Bach with other composers both before and after his time.

The great thing about audio book lectures about music is that the subject matter can be listened to while being discussed. I bought this Bach lecture for its four chapters about the St Matthew Passion. The performance used during the discussion, however, is gut-wrenchingly poor. The most troublesome aspect of it is its tempo, which is an incredible 15-20% bpm too slow. Of course, the taste for tempi can be subjective. But in this performance it is far below anything acceptable. The normally very fierce and punchy Storm passage “Sind Blitzen, sind Donner” is downright dreary. Once finished, Greenberg does not himself give an opinion about it, but he quotes others: “.. arousal raising devices … “, “ … most violent and grandiose descriptions of unloosened passion produced in the entire baroque …“, “… Christian outrage and protest …”.Normally, yes. But following this feet-dragging performance such comments are just laughable and come across as a mockery of the piece. The people cry out for Christ to be crucified in “Lasst Ihn kreuzigen!”. This turba should be full of vengeance and brutality. The scored tempo – allegro – is crucial to achieve the effect. But the slow tempo of the performance in this audio book make it sound like a lullaby. There are many such examples. Much of Greenberg’s comment are in themselves correct, but often the opposite of what we have just heard. It makes one cringe.Other than the tempo, there are other problems with this performance of the St Matthew Passion. The choir raises garbled in several places. The microphones of some of the soloists sound as if they are placed 20 meters removed, while next to others. One can only presume that Greenberg has had no say in the choice of the performance. “The Great Course” may have chosen a cheap one to avoid rights. So, to be clear, this review is not a comment on Greenberg but on the choice of the performance. “The Great Courses” should replace it with a representative one for this lecture to be potentially really good.

loved it!

Hard to overstate Dr. Greenberg’s expertise, articulation, depth, and pace. We have long loved Bach and indeed all Baroque music; this course has given us a far better understanding of Bach, his era, and his genius. It helped us to make richer and deeper discriminations, appreciating even more the music that has long given us somuch pleasure, serenity, and joy.
