It's pretty much an old style book with lots of pictures and good explanation of the traditional practice. There is no depiction of the combat or self-defense aspect of the art at all, as this book focuses completely on basic forms practiced in these arts. It would be much better if it started with shorter forms and worked up to longer forms, but this "long form first" seems to have been the method that gained popularity in the 1970s and has clung hard ever since. For modern audiences, however, shorter forms ensure that more students will actually stick around long enough to learn the longer forms later.
Spiffing taster. Blaster beginner. Sweet siren. If you are serious but teetering about learning Xing Yi and/or Bagua then "Chinese Internal Boxing; Techniques of Hsing-I & Pa-kua," this darling of a publication may be just what you want as a 50/50% inspiration or decider. Maybe it will motivate you to find a very experienced Master or Sifu who like to instruct in INTERNAL Martial Arts/Healing/Meditation which, if you would like to, keep practicing well into old age (unlike External fighting things). This book is a lovingly packed wonder. As for taking it further, as I must specify, the reader MUST learn from an Expert - somebody who knows all aspects of the contents of this book and go very much DEEPER BEYOND this lovely little book and, as things go well for you with the Expert or Master or Sifu willing to teach you - be humble and polite, they will probably (secretly LOVE) like to help you.Your lifestyle and life drawn upon internal body mechanics and explosive huffings and puffings (and, yes, they are vital to, at least, Hsing-I quan.) I think I have a couple of Pa-kua (Bagua) Zhang dvds and, if memory serves, the Instructor Master also did the explosive puffy noisy noises as well. I think they aid in transmitting stored chi/qi? I'll have to look for at the first or SECOND 'Application' Bisio Bagua zhang dvd again, so don't quote me on that. From start to finish production to patiently waiting to see how this book will help me in Spain; everybody involved is a true Professional at their more-than-vocations. I'm on tender-hooks. Even now I have to slap my hand if it dare stray towards fascination and motivation to move towards first, reading with the pictures "Chinese Internal Boxing":...towards meeting my Master who knows all there is about INTERNAL Martial Arts and life long health and dismissal of damage and pain.I think I tend to concur with all the 5-STAR specimens such as Mr. Ree is, since he is the only genetic rubbish in the whole of his/my family. Indeed, the World. Maybe I'll also perk up!As for the book,BUY IT.
I think that everyone interested in Xingyi and Bagua should aquire this book! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven....btw, I dont mind giveing this book a great review but requiring that the review be a certain number of words...that just annoys me and makes me want to skip doing a review at all.
I am happy with this book
This is a great introductory book to learn the basic movements of Xingyi and Bagua. The book is divided into two parts, the first half teaches a little bit about the history of Xingyi, the basic principles of the stance (San ti shi) and the style, things to keep in mind during training, and it then goes into the forms in great detail. The second half gives the same treatment for Bagua. The book contains clear pictures accompanied by detailed descriptions on how to do the forms: Xingyi's Wu hsing (5 elements fist) and 12 animals, as well as Bagua's 8 changes. The book, however, lacks a section about application, and does not go into great detail about internal training and other concepts such as Nei kung or training the Yi (intent).Still, the book's aim is to teach the forms, and with the detail given to how to do them and the basic principles, I can say that the book is excellent as a beginner's guide. With this book teaching you the forms, I can recommend Martial Mechanics: Maximum Results with Minimum Effort in the Practice of the Martial Arts to teach you what it means to fight using an internal style, and Combat Techniques of Taiji, Xingyi, and Bagua: Principles and Practices of Internal Martial Arts to teach you more on how to train.
This book is an excellent, in-depth examination of the Chen Pan Ling method of Hsing-I Chuan and the Wang Shu Jin method of Bagua Zhang. Very clear step-by-step photos and written instructions together with valuable information regarding the deeper aspects of both of these excellent Chinese internal martial arts.
Has forms and they are good forms. Both of the authors are respectable master of their styles. I just wished that there would have been applications with the forms mentioned.
