“Toproping” is rock climbing with the rope anchored at the top of the climb, as opposed to “lead” climbing, where a climber places protection as he or she goes. Having a top anchor lessens the potential distance of a fall and creates a more controlled situation in which to hone your climbing technique. Toproping is at the heart of learning to climb, and being able to safely set up and manage toprope situations is a critical component in the development of any climber. While it seems simple on the surface, topropes must be rigged and configured properly in accordance with sound safety principles—and that’s where this book comes in.Here you’ll find everything a beginning climber needs to know about toproping: knots to use, basic and advanced anchor set-ups, belay techniques, lowering from fixed anchors, site management, and more. Color photos will help guide you through complex toproping situations. Rescue skills and risk management are also covered, along with a section on how to toprope. And there’s nobody better to teach these skills than author Bob Gaines, an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Instructor and longtime Joshua Tree climbing guide.Inside you’ll find information on: Equipment Knots and hitches Anchoring Toprope systems Belaying Rappelling Lowering Assistance/Rescue Skills Risk management Group management Teaching Novices

This book has everything you need to be ready for the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course and is great study material for the exam. Some of the pictures are a little wonky but that's the publisher's fault not the author. The systems are sound and the book is extremely readable. It has a guide section in the back with tons of tips for instruction and fostering a professional top-rope environment for a number of clients.
Every beginning top rope climber should purchase this book and read it front to back. The systems described are bomber and show the reader how they can rig top rope anchors in a variety of situations, including routes where the anchors are set back from the cliff's edge.
This was one of the best of the climbing series that I have read. I would recommend this for anyone who is getting into climbing and is ready to transition to outdoor toproping. I will be supplementing this with an outdoor class, but overall one of the best in the series.
Great basics for getting started with Top Rope Climbing. Decent number of color pics for detailed steps
I am making the transition from indoors (gym) to outdoors toproping and found this book immensely valuable. It is well written, well illustrated, and covers almost everything you need to know to safely toprope. This includes basic equipment, knots, anchoring techniques, belaying techniques, rappelling, basic self-rescue and a few other advanced topics. The one thing I missed was a deeper dive into how to SAFELY approach, set up, tear down, and leave toprope anchor location in crags. This includes:- Safeguards when approaching/leaving the anchor location- Personal anchor systems vs. static ropes vs. dynamic ropes to secure yourself while setting the anchor- Different scenarios. From safest: toprope location can be approached with an easy hike and is far from the cliff's edge; to most dangerous: toprope anchor must be approached with a class 3/4 scramble and consists of a couple of bolts past the cliff's edge, hanging on the vertical.- Once the anchor is finished, how to transition from the personal anchor to rappelling or protection-free, in case the climber wants to/has to walk down;- Once the climbing is finished, how to safely transition to a personal anchor, tear-down the main anchor and finally rappel/walk down.Considering that most toproping accidents happen during the anchor set-up and tear-down, I find this omission somewhat serious, and removed one star because of it.
This is good but the AMGA single pitch manual written by the same authors is hands down the better purchase
Great book if your learning how to top rope. Covers a lot of information from hardware and software to top rope anchors and belaying. I wish I went into more detail about different methods of extending top rope anchors but the area is does cover on the subject is bombproof.
Excellent overview of toproping. Much of the information was already known to me, but even as an experienced climber I had plenty to learn from Bob Gaines.
